Eliminating Nutritional Problems, Main Goal of UNESCO Category 2 Center

Head of sciences and technologies department of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences referred to approval of establishing a UNESCO category 2 center in this university and announced reducing and eliminating nutritional problems as the main goals of this center.

According to WebDa, stating that following many years of pursuance and negotiations with the World Health Organization and UNESCO this center was operationalized as the first center in the country, Dr. Majid Ghayour Mobarhan said: “this center’s priority is micronutrients and resolving the problem of vitamin D in the country”.

Mentioning that lack of micronutrients lead to non-contingent diseases in people, faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “according to studies, 85 to 90 percent of people suffer from malnutrition”.

Dr. Ghayour Mobarhan said: “malnutrition is defined as weight loss and weight gain; it is estimated that malnutrition associated with weight gain is about 55 to 60 percent and with weight loss is about 10 percent in Mashhad”.

Pointing that lack of micronutrients such as vitamin D is effective in many diseases such as mood disorders, depression, learning disorders, aggressiveness, bone problems, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, blood pressure, kidney and liver diseases, he said: “the aim of running UNESCO category 2 center is to conduct research to enhance people’s nutrition supported by the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Ghayour Mobarhan said that this center paves the way to implement joint research plans with other countries. He hoped that these plans be effective in improving nutrition in Iran and other countries.

It is worth noting that the international UNESCO category 2 center works in the area of health and nutrition in Mashhad and it is the first center established under the Ministry of Health. It is highly effective in the area of health and nutrition in national, regional and global levels.
