Mashhad University of Medical Sciences Capable to Conduct Advanced Surgeries

Referring to capability of faculty members of this department to conduct advanced surgeries, associate professor of the general surgery department of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “currently, all invasive and non-invasive surgeries can be conducted in Mashhad”.

Talking to WebDa about advances made in surgeries done in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ali Jangju said: “in the surgery department, it is attempted that subspecialty surgeries be conducted; thus, faculty members take subspecialty courses in advanced countries and they have managed to acquire capabilities to conduct organ transplant and cancer surgeries so that they can serve pilgrims and neighbors of Emam Reza holy shrine”.

Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is the third center with minimally-invasive surgery fellowship

Faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “this university is the third center in the country that has established minimally-invasive surgery fellowship and now provides necessary training in the field of minimally-invasive surgeries by creating two fellowships for the third consecutive year”.

Defining minimally-invasive surgeries, associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “in minimally-invasive surgeries, large incisions on the body are eliminated and procedures are performed through tiny incisions”.

Dr. Jangju said: “currently, most surgical procedures inside and outside body orifices are being conducted using minimally-invasive methods, and to preserve our status, we are carrying out surgical procedures such as removing the stomach, esophagus, colon, pancreas, spleen and adrenal gland (if there is tumor) using this method”.

30 percent of surgical complications is eliminated by omitting surgical incisions

He said: “many surgical procedures can be done using the minimally-invasive method; therefore, by omitting surgical incisions, 30 percent of complications arising from incisions can be eliminated”.

Faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “with regard to cancers, considerable progress have been made and the surgeons have acquired skills. In this line, two young professors of the university (Dr. Soltani and Dr. Asadi) have been sent to Tehran and the U.S. to take part in cancer surgery fellowship programs. After they are back home, they will conduct advanced cancer surgeries in the university”.

Associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “different organs’ regeneration that was once unimaginable in the university is now being done and it can be claimed that there is no cancer surgery in the field of general surgery which cannot be conducted by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences”.

Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, second university in terms of the number of liver transplant surgeries

Mentioning successes in liver and bile ducts (pancreas) surgery, faculty member of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said: “Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is the second university in the country in terms of the number of surgical procedures. Although liver transplant surgeries have not long been conducted in the university, the number of surgical procedures is too high”.

Dr. jangju said: “pancreas transplant surgery was conducted for the first time in this university while pioneering Shiraz university has been conducting this surgery for about three years. However, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has successfully carried out two highly complicated concurrent kidney and pancreas transplant surgeries”.

Associate professor of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences added: “success of transplants in Mashhad University is considerable, because surgery teams have been highly successful in terms of structure (selection, surgery and treatments after surgery)”.

Dr. Jangju pointed to establishing colorectal surgery fellowship program as a purpose of this department and said: “patients with gastrointestinal and colon cancers get elimination and pelvis floor disorders; thus, colorectal surgery fellowship program is going to be established in Mashhad in the near future”.
