Successful Heart Transplantation for a Six-Year-Old Child

According to Webda, 37th heart transplantation was successfully performed for a heart failure patient at Emam Reza Educational, Research and Treatment Center, a hospital covered by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

“This operation was successfully performed for a 6-year-old child living in Birjand suffering from severe heart failure. The heart was taken at Montaserieh Dialysis and Organ Transplantation Center from an 11-year-old brain-dead donor (from electric shock), and was transplanted at the Open Heart Surgery Ward of Emam Reza Hospital,” said Dr. Mohammad Abbasi, subspecialist in heart surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Behzad Alizadeh, pediatric cardiology subspecialist and attending physician of the patient then said, “One of the most significant points about the heart and lung transplantation team of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences is the short ischemia time (60 minutes on average, 47 minutes for this patient). We did not face any problems during this operation, fortunately, and the patient was transferred to ICU for special care and recovery.”

He added, “This was our first heart transplantation for a 6-years-old patient. Fortunately, the heart transplantation team of the university consists of young, highly skilled, committed, and sympathetic colleagues, and coordination of the team and its achievements have become more evident with time.”
