Infectious Diseases Ward of Akbar Hospital, the Only Pediatrics Sub-Specialist Ward in the East of the Country

Head of the infectious diseases sub-specialist ward of Akbar Hospital-under coverage of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences-said: “the pediatric infectious diseases ward is the first sub-specialist pediatrics ward in the north east of the country”.

Talking to WebDa, Dr. Abdulkarim Hamedi said: “following operationalization of Akbar children’s Hospital, the sub-specialist pediatric infectious diseases ward of Emam Reza Hospital was transferred to Akbar Hospital. This ward is located on the fourth floor of the hospital that has 12 beds and an isolated bed for patients with contingent diseases”.

Mentioning that three faculty members of the university work at this ward, Dr. Hamedi said: “facilities and personnel have been provided up to 80 percent in this ward, there is a playing room for children and a relaxed atmosphere prevails in all wards of the hospital”.

Head of the infectious diseases sub-specialist ward of Akbar Hospital said: “children with infectious diseases come from various cities such as Zahedan, Semnan, etc. to this ward and receive sub-specialist services”.

Dr. Hamedi said: “with regard to hand hygiene infection control, the pediatric infectious diseases department of the university has taken measures with the help of the World Health Organization to control and transfer infection so much so that professor Didier Pittet, director of the Infection Control Program of WHO has come to Mashhad twice and has done many things for hand hygiene, especially in Akbar Hospital”.

“One of such measures is to put disinfectant solutions for doctors and patient companions above patient’s bed”, he continued, “this solution is used to wash hands before and after doing anything and it dries easily because it contains alcohol. It is also used to prevent from transfer of the disease”.

Pointing out the importance of hand hygiene, head of the infectious diseases sub-specialist ward of Akbar Hospital said: “as hand hygiene is highly crucial, two international congresses on controlling hand infection have been held so far with the presence of physicians from Iran, the U.S., Switzerland, etc.”
